Edge Camp

Apparel Design x Social Media

Each year, a different theme for Edge Camp — a Catholic summer camp for students in grades 5 to 8 — is chosen to shape the program, content, environment and apparel for the entire camp. Our task is to create designs that represent Catholic stories and values, are visually relevant and aligns with the theme, but doesn’t break the bank. Throughout the process, collaboration and feedback from the client play a crucial role in refining and finalizing the design, resulting in visually compelling and meaningful designs that people would want to wear even after camp is done.

2021: “Hidden” is inspired by the early Church who took refuge in the catacombs in order to celebrate the Eucharist, even when Roman authorities threatened and persecuted them for their beliefs. Both then and now, Christians are called to live out their faith, share the Gospel, and to not be afraid even in the face of opposition. The Ichthys symbol (a.k.a. “Jesus fish”) – a sign typically used to proclaim an affiliation with or affinity for Christianity — is used in this design, but hidden in plain sight.

2022: “Viva Cristo Rei” translates to “Long Live Christ the King.” It is an invitation to place Jesus Christ at the centre of our lives, and to crown him King of Kings and King of our hearts. Inspiration for the shirt design comes from L.A.-style graffiti with paint-sprayed tags on walls as the “mark” of territory and dominance. The pops of colours used (i..e purple and gold) not only represent the vibrancy of street style, but also the royal lineage of Jesus.

2023: “To The Ends” comes from Deuteronomy 30:4 in the Bible that says, “Even if you are exiled to the ends of the world, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there he will bring you back.” It is a message of hope and a promise of love that God will go to the ends of the world for His people. The overall direction for this design is to incorporate the desert symbolizing the 40 Days of Israelites travelling to the Promise Land, but without making it look too western/cowboy. The four points of the diamond represent the ends (north, west, east, south); the desert represents the physical and spiritual journey of all Christians; and the sun represents the Holy Spirit who guides and lights our way.
